The Lloyd F. deGeneres “Big D” Scholarship was presented to 2024 Denham Springs High School seniors Hayden Grace Averette and Ryan A. Verrett.
Each received $1,000, which is presented annually to a graduating senior. Its intent is to offer a hand to help pay college expenses.
The students must exhibit good character, initiative and work ethic, a news release said. He or she must be planning to enter a field of public service such as teaching, social work, nursing, medicine or law enforcement.
Averette, the daughter of Jason and Lindsay Averette of Denham Springs, will attend William Carey College to major in secondary education.
Verrette, the son of Randy and Dawn Verrette of Denham Springs, will attend Southeastern Louisiana University. He plans to major in history and political science with a goal of entering the teaching profession in graduate school.
This is the ninth year that Kathy deGeneres has presented these scholarships.

The Recipients
The first recipient, Emily Johnson, has been a standout pupil at some stage in her high school career.
